We still have farther to go, as many people have not received their updated booster, and others have yet to receive their very first dose. This week, Lemuel Bradshaw shares his experience with us, as a two-time heart recipient and a long-time advocate for organ, eye, and tissue donation.

“My second heart transplant was performed in February of 2020, just a month before the world went into lockdown because of COVID. As a new transplant recipient, I would have been isolated for several weeks anyway. Fears about COVID turned that into what was essentially a two-year house arrest.

I am by nature a gregarious person who loves interacting with people. Though I still mask and avoid large crowds indoors, the vaccine has allowed me to get back to whatever the new normal is. I am overjoyed to be safely out and about once again!”

We are also overjoyed that Lemuel gets to be safely out and about! Vaccination and other precautions have allowed Lemuel to resume in-person advocacy and community engagement events and to enjoy time with family and friends, even presiding over a wedding.

Esperanza para las fiestas: la historia de Lemuel

¡En esta temporada de reflexión, compartimos historias de por qué las vacunas contra el COVID-19 nos dan esperanza para las fiestas! Sin duda, las vacunas COVID han transformado nuestras vidas para mejor. Todavía tenemos más camino por recorrer, ya que muchas personas no han recibido su refuerzo actualizado y otras aún no han recibido su primera dosis. Esta semana, Lemuel Bradshaw comparte su experiencia con nosotros, como como dos veces receptor de corazón y defensor desde hace mucho tiempo de la donación de órganos, ojos y tejidos.

“Mi segundo trasplante de corazón se realizó en febrero de 2020, solo un mes antes de que el mundo se bloqueara debido a la COVID. Como nuevo receptor de trasplante, de todos modos habría estado aislado durante varias semanas. Los temores sobre la COVID convirtieron eso en lo que era esencialmente un arresto domiciliario de dos años.

¡También estamos encantados de que Lemuel pueda estar a salvo fuera de casa! La vacunación y otras precauciones han permitido a Lemuel reanudar los eventos de promoción y participación comunitaria en persona y disfrutar del tiempo con familiares y amigos, incluso presidiendo una boda.

This week, Linda Roulier Rogers shares her experience with us, as an immunocompromised patient at high risk for severe illness. Watch below to learn how the combination of COVID vaccines and Evusheld has helped her reconnect to the active life she enjoyed before the pandemic.

For me it was even more frightening, because as we went along through the pandemic, we started learning more and more about how COVID-19 affects the body, and subsequently we did find out that certain groups of immunocompromised patients like myself were going to battle this for a much longer time.

I am Linda Roulier Rogers. I am 75 and a half years old. Prior to the pandemic, I had pretty much a normal life. People who know me would say, Linda never met a stranger and Linda never let the ground dry under her feet for very long.

I mean, I went nowhere. I stayed here in my apartment. I didn’t go inside grocery stores, didn’t go to restaurants, didn’t visit friends and family. So two and a half, we’re almost three years into this, and my lifestyle’s completely changed. 

I was so excited in January of 21 when the vaccines first came out. I’ve been in medicine all my life. I’m a firm believer in vaccinations. But the medication I’m on is one of the few medications that prevents my body from forming antibodies to the COVID-19 vaccine. I am one of those patients who is eligible for Evusheld. That, along with three other COVID vaccine injections that I’ve had, which I will continue to get – Evusheld really gave me that second weight off my shoulders. I really did feel that just maybe, Evusheld and the combination of maybe getting something from my COVID-19 vaccines, would allow me to do a little bit more. And it has!

I previously volunteered at the regional blood center, We Are Blood, here in Austin before the pandemic hit. I feel comfortable going back to the blood center and doing their orientations for their new volunteers, which is really fun and exciting. If people weren’t vaccinated there, and didn’t wear masks, and I wasn’t vaccinated, I wouldn’t have been able to go back. I’m thankful for the vaccine. It has changed my life. 

And one other thing I’d like to say: that every person who gets the COVID vaccine makes my world safer. And that to me is very important. Probably the most important thing: that we as human beings take care of each other, and taking care of each other means we get vaccinated. To protect our family, our loved ones, our co-workers, and those of us who still have to somewhat isolate.

Para mí fue aún más aterrador, porque a medida que atravesábamos la pandemia, empezamos a aprender más y más sobre cómo el COVID-19 afecta el cuerpo y, posteriormente, descubrimos que ciertos grupos de pacientes inmunocomprometidos como yo iban a luchar esto por mucho más tiempo.

Soy Linda Roulier Rogers. Tengo 75 años y medio. Antes de la pandemia, tenía una vida prácticamente normal. Las personas que me conocen dirían, Linda nunca conoció a un extraño y Linda nunca dejó que el suelo bajo sus pies se secara por mucho tiempo.

Quiero decir, no fui a ninguna parte. Me quedé aquí en mi apartamento. No entré en tiendas de comestibles, no fui a restaurantes, no visité a amigos y familiares. Dos años y medio, llevamos casi tres años en esto, y mi estilo de vida ha cambiado por completo.

Estaba tan emocionada el 21 de enero cuando salieron las vacunas por primera vez. He estado en la profesión médica toda mi vida. Soy un firme creyente en las vacunas. Pero el medicamento que estoy tomando es uno de los pocos medicamentos que evita que mi cuerpo forme anticuerpos contra la vacuna COVID-19. Soy uno de esos pacientes elegibles para Evusheld. Eso, junto con otras tres inyecciones de la vacuna COVID que he recibido, que continuaré recibiendo, Evusheld realmente me quitó un segundo peso de encima. Realmente sentí que tal vez, Evusheld y la combinación de tal vez obtener algo de mis vacunas COVID-19, me permitirían hacer un poco más. Y me han permitido hacer más.

Anteriormente fui voluntario en el centro regional de donación de sangre, We Are Blood, aquí en Austin antes de que llegara la pandemia. Me siento cómodo volviendo al centro de sangre y haciendo sus orientaciones para sus nuevos voluntarios, lo cual es realmente divertido y emocionante. Si la gente no estuviera vacunada allí, y no usara máscaras, y yo no estuviera vacunado, no hubiera podido regresar. Estoy agradecido por la vacuna. Ha cambiado mi vida.

Y otra cosa que me gustaría decir: que cada persona que recibe la vacuna COVID hace que mi mundo sea más seguro. Y eso para mí es muy importante. Probablemente lo más importante: que los seres humanos nos cuidemos, y cuidarnos es vacunarnos. Para proteger a nuestra familia, a nuestros seres queridos, a nuestros compañeros de trabajo, y a los que todavía tenemos que aislarnos un poco.
